The Hunger Project's Vision is a world where every woman, man and child leads a healthy, fulfilling life of self-reliance and dignity. The Hunger Project’s Mission is to end hunger and poverty by pioneering sustainable, grassroots, women-centered strategies and advocating for their widespread adoption in countries throughout the world. We know it’s possible for hunger to end, and that our generation has the power to end it once and for all. In our experience, people who live in hunger are not the problem – they are the solution. We don’t see a billion mouths to feed, we see a billion human beings who are enterprising and resilient. The work, therefore, is to unlock their capacity, creativity and leadership, so they can end their own hunger. That’s what we do. The Hunger Project empowers women and men living in rural villages in Africa, India, Bangladesh and Latin America to end their own hunger. We reach more than 16.1 million people who are transforming themselves, their families and their communities, and are bringing about the end of hunger. We’ve always believed the end of hunger is possible, and as of September 2015, 193 world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals to end poverty, inequality and halt climate change. The Global Goals set out a vision for the world from 2015 to 2030 so that we all work collectively and collaboratively towards the end of hunger. We always knew that it would take much more than ‘business as usual’ to end hunger, so this alignment of governments and international organisations to this deadline is a crucial tipping point for the end of hunger. This is a big shift globally in how we think about hunger. This is a really exciting time for us and our village partners. We’re thrilled you’re part of it too.

Our wonderful green story began in 2009, in the biodiverse corridor of the Umgeni River Valley. Partnering with eThekweni Municipality, our work with the local communities drove our early eco-programme approach. Over time, our Green Corridor hubs emerged across river, ocean and land ecosystems within Durban. They have become our incubators for ground-breaking social and environmental initiatives. Our collective focus has been on youth and sport development, open space management and restoration, and eco-tourism and learning. We’ve generated a growing portfolio of what we call Purpose-Projects, all concentrated on driving local sustainability, creating balanced habitats, and building community resilience. Our story transcends the constraints of wards, borders and regions. We’ve achieved that by embracing eco-system thinking, and highlighting the interdependence of communities with nature. The renaming of Durban Green Corridors to Green Corridors speaks to this, and is a significant step in our organisation’s evolution. We work tirelessly to make connections between what we’ve learned from our local partnerships, to the neighbouring regions and beyond. At Green Corridors, our purpose and ethos makes us strong partners and agents for the realisation of vibrant, sustainable and economically integrated communities. Plunging into a new culture and experience a different way to see the world is one of the key learning aspects of our volunteer program. Living in a new and non-familiar environment and working in a Zulu community in South Africa is part of that unique and requires a special amount of courage. Green Corridors aims to engage young people from various countries in our community development programs around Durban. It is a highly beneficial learning experience for both the volunteers and the community. You as a volunteer will learn a lot about yourself and it gives you the chance to develop cross-cultural communication skills. Further, by sharing your skills and contributing to community based projects, locals get the chance to expand their knowledge and learn from you. Become a volunteer for Green Corridors for a life-changing experience!

My name is Luis Guillermo Castro Martin. I am a philosopher specialized in philosophy of mind and language. In particular, I am interested in the nature of consciousness, and the way in which we experience and interpret the world. I started my studies at the Central University of Venezuela in 2006, where I obtained a bachelor’s degree in philosophy (2011) and a master’s degree in logic and philosophy of science (2015). In 2012, the university offered me a position as a professor of philosophy and I taught several courses there until 2017, when I enrolled in a PhD program at the University of Genoa, Italy. I have also published several papers in philosophy journals and participated in various international events. In 2020, while writing my PhD thesis, I realized that I had been immersed in philosophy for too long and decided to use my experience to rejoin the real world. In my years studying philosophy, I have learned many things, but the most important is that the world is what we make of it, there is no ultimate truth, no final word. We create our reality. Knowledge has somehow separated us from others and nature, perhaps it can also reunite us. Although I was born in Venezuela, my family is a blending of different nationalities and traditions. I have lived and studied in different countries, which are all part of who I am and what I want to be. My actions define me, not my nationality or my origins. I do not believe in borders or limits; they are only in our minds. The sensation of not belonging can be liberating, once we realize that, by not belonging somewhere, we belong everywhere. I speak three languages (Spanish, English, and Italian) and I enjoy learning from other cultures, as well as transmitting the values of my own. I also enjoy music, sports and nature. I am the author of “Fragments of Mind” on Substack. A space for thinking outside the box, while discussing philosophical matters.

It all started in 1999 with a vision to create a space where people could live and learn together in an ecologically sustainable environment. We share the story through the people that were part of shaping it. In 2019 the Sustainability Institute is celebrating its 20-year anniversary. We reflect back on this amazing journey, and share our story as told by some of the people that made all of this possible. The design of the Sustainability Institute was done by keeping in mind how available local resources could be incorporated into the infrastructure, how existing infrastructure could be reused and how the natural elements could be used to cool and heat the buildings. Take a look at how it all came together, as explained by the original architect, Gita Goven. The SI is committed to putting children at the heart of what we do. Education is a right for all children and our core work focuses on enabling access to quality education for children from the Lynedoch Valley. This is our third video which focuses on the various programmes related to the children and youth. You will get a glimpse into the Lynedoch Children’s House, SPARK Primary school, the Youth Hub programme and Lynedoch United Football Club. The Lynedoch Eco-Village is a mixed community organised around a child-centered learning precinct. It strives to be a working example of a liveable ecologically designed urban system that is self-sustainable. Above all else, the Lynedoch Eco-Village provides a safe space where South Africans from all backgrounds can live in peace with each other and in harmony with nature. In our fifth video, we share some reflections from residents. The Sustainability Institute hosts programmes designed to challenge conventional thinking and open minds to new ways of doing and approaching the known, while incorporating the entire space at the Institute as part of the learning experience. Take a look at the different educational programmes we have been offering since 2003. Food brings people together. At the SI we not only prepare delicious locally sourced organic food, but our food garden provides fresh vegetables and herbs used in daily meals for the children, students, and guests. We reconnect people with where food comes from, and our food garden and approach to food serves as a beautiful living-learning environment. When the Institute started in 1999, there were not many trees and wildlife around. To restore the natural ecosystem and to create a green space protected from any buildings or development, a piece of land was put aside for an indigenous woodland. Over the past 16 years our students, guided by the vision of our woodland custodian Bryce Anderson and Fumanekile Qhinga, have helped to plant trees and shrubs that have grown into this beautiful, peaceful woodland. Today it is flourishing and what was once a barren space, is growing into a dense forest of trees and shrubs. The woodlands provide an opportunity for solitude and connection to nature.

Professionally, I am an attorney, practicing family, contract and insurance law, on a part-time basis, allowing me to pick and choose my clients and cases. I am also a business owner of a SCUBA diving training and charter company, and a qualified SCUBA diver instructor and mentor to dive professional trainees. I am a 42-year-old woman and I have been living in a beautiful corner of the world, at the edge of the Garden Route, in a little town called Mossel Bay, South Africa for 10 years. I have been married for 9 years and I have a 17-year-old son. I also have two adult step-daughters and two young (step) granddaughters. But who is Leanne Walmsley, at her core? Most know me as a wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend or colleague. What they may not know about me, (except those nearest and dearest), is that I am a dreamer and I dream big dreams. I am an extrovert, not shy to shine, unafraid to lead. I have entrepreneurial vision but pragmatism and circumstance have made for very practical decisions over the last two decades, leaving my dreams shelved, to gather only dust. I have it settled deep within my spirit, the desire to impact lives, in a beneficial way, and to do so, far and wide. I have, for too long, been as a ship anchored, safely in Port. This is not what this ship was made for - I yearn to set sail, to see the world. The time is near, the winds of change favourable. I have a few projects I’m busy with presently and I’m pregnant with promise and ambition. I am excited and a little anxious at the same time, cautious, but determined… committed to move forward into the fullness of my raison d’être. Watch this space…

At African Impact, we create the most transformative and impactful volunteer experiences on the planet for communities, wildlife and volunteers. The year was 2004 and a handful of well-traveled people sat around a table in the heart of the Zimbabwean wilderness. With backgrounds in tourism, development and conservation, they knew they wanted to do something great. They wanted to use their passion and skills to start a travel company that made a difference. They wanted to introduce people to the Africa they knew. The people. The wildlife. The magic. When we opened our doors to our first batch of international volunteers, we were a small, family-run organization with big dreams. It didn’t take long to see that there were a lot more people like us. People who wanted to travel while truly experiencing a country at its best, and worst. People who wanted to genuinely connect with the local people and to leave a place better than they found it. We grew and opened new volunteer projects in new countries across Southern Africa. We eventually set up home in the most beautiful city in the world, Cape Town. As the industry grew we recognized that doing the right thing, being responsible, doing good, and still providing travel experiences was, at times, complicated. We grappled with what we were… a travel company? A tourism company? How was the volunteer experience related to the impact they made? The industry was evolving, and so were we. We are incredibly lucky to have an amazing team of people behind African Impact, most who started as volunteers and have been on this journey since the beginning. This is our strength and what has allowed us, over the years, to go beyond volunteering, to focus on what it does best; provide an exchange of ideas and mindsets. We’ve learned that if a community has total buy-in and ownership of a project – and a volunteer is truly informed about their own role and contribution to this – volunteering has the power to transform both a community and a volunteer. That is a beautiful thing and what we witness every day on our projects. Ultimately, our goal is to take volunteering, internships and group travel as far as it can go, combining genuine impacts with extraordinary experiences. Our story isn’t over, we haven’t even scratched the surface. So, learn more about us, ask the right questions and if we’re the right organization for you, we’re excited to welcome you on our journey.

Projects Abroad has spent over 25 years helping our participants fulfill their potential and make the world a better place. In the days before the internet, smartphones and budget airlines, an English University Professor and some overseas colleagues had an idea: What if young people could become international volunteers? They could learn new skills and contribute to communities at the same time. That was over 25 years ago and we’ve never looked back. While plenty of other companies have followed where we lead, we’re still the gold standard in international volunteering and internships. Every Project is built on our commitment to: safety, hassle-free travel and making a real impact. Projects Abroad is a social enterprise, which means we employ a business model to tackle the world’s social and environmental challenges. Our staff are all either in-country locals who we train and support, or ex-volunteers, who have been there, experienced the projects and seen what a difference they make. Our plans for the future are big. We believe that meaningful travel provide a defining experience for young people as they move from adolescence into adulthood, and we know that the work we do transforms communities. We’re making the world a better place, one participant at a time.

Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) is a leading Section 21 Non-Profit Organisation that addresses food security, environmental sustainability, and greening. We have a large and diverse programme portfolio, which you can explore here. Our ethos is one of efficiency, transparency, and accountability. We run our non-profit like a business / social enterprise and continue to innovate in the space. This approach has led to us being one of the best social development organisations on the continent. After nearly thirty years of experience, we understand what it takes to achieve real, long-term sustainability and want to make a positive difference to the lives of all South Africans. Food security — particularly in the context of global climate change — is one of the most important issues of our time. The World Food Summit of 1996 defined food security as existing when all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet the dietary needs for a productive and healthy life. A lack of food security, within any tier of our society, will lead to instability and impact everyone. Therefore, it is a collective act of social justice that we work towards making food insecurity a thing of the past. At Food & Trees for Africa, we take a broad view of food security which includes both income and non-income producing agriculture, small and large scale projects, as well as additional elements of the water-energy-food security nexus. We practice bio-intensive agriculture (in its many forms) including agro-ecology, permaculture, conservation and rehabilitation agriculture, and natural farming. This doesn’t mean we farm without science or practicality — in fact, quite the opposite. We just take a longer-term view on soil health, improving the energy of a system, and maximising its productivity with bio-inputs. It’s all the rage these days — but we’ve been doing it since the 90s.
